The blistering heat of the summer sun made it easy to imagine that the Goochland County clay was red from sunburn.
But the soil was moist after a spate of rainy days, so for the hop vines stretching up strings on a knoll at Lickinghole Creek, the intense light was a boon. On some of the strands, thumb-size cones hung in profusion; elsewhere, the tendrils were just beginning their climb toward maturity.
